Trifle Cowl Knitting Pattern

Check out these kits from Bad Sheep Yarn!

The Trifle Cowl was originally designed in collaboration with Bad Sheep Yarn for their 2023 Advent Box — a joyful swirl of color and texture that knitters immediately fell in love with. Now this pattern is available for everyone, and it remains one of my favorite “easy-but-interesting” knits in the Wool & Wyrd corner of the desert.

The intention behind this design was simple: create a cowl that welcomes newer knitters while still giving seasoned makers something soothing and satisfying to sink into. The Four Row Pattern Repeat is rhythmic and meditative, the color possibilities are endless, and the construction is quietly clever — worked flat and then seamed into a faux mobius shape. That’s right: it looks like a twist, but the whole thing is worked flat.

This cowl is deliciously stash-friendly. Use fingering weight yarn held double, DK weight yarn, scraps, minis, leftovers, or a custom kit from Bad Sheep Yarn if you want to lean into Marcie’s color magic. The Trifle Cowl plays well with them all and produces a soft, squishy, generously cozy finished piece.
