Wool & Weather: Fiber Path Field Notes

Updated: Aug 6

Welcome to Wool & Weather: field notes from the fiber path, an open letter.

7.25.2025

My dear Tangled Makers,

This week’s post is a bit of an experiment with equal parts yarn and curiosity. I’ve been writing long-form email newsletters for a hot minute and sharing my knitting patterns, behind-the-scenes glimpses, seasonal inspiration, and the daily magic of a fiber-based life. But lately, I’ve been craving something a little more woven, a little more interactive; something that lives on, is easier to find again, and invites you to talk back.

Welcome to Wool & Weather: field notes from the fiber path.
But lately, I’ve been craving something a little more woven, a little more interactive—something that lives on, is easier to find again, and invites you to talk back.

That’s why I’m trying something new: turning my weekly newsletter into a blog series I’m calling Wool & Weather: field notes from the fiber path. This space will still carry the spirit of my letters with knitting updates, fiber magic, nature’s rhythms, life reflections. But perhaps this way, you’ll be able to read, comment, and even revisit past posts with ease. Think of it as a weathered journal left open on a sunlit table, where we can gather and leave notes for each other in the margins.

I’m not sure if I’ll keep sending the full newsletter by email, or just a short note linking to each post. I know clicking away can feel like a lot, and truthfully, a part of me worries: will anyone follow me out here? But so many of you say you read every word—and that means the world to me! So I’m trusting that if this feels right, the path will rise to meet us.

Let me know what you think by answering the poll in the email. I really want to hear from you.

Now, on to the good stuff: this week’s Tour de Fleece update, some woofling cuteness, and a major changes in the Schuttner household!

Tour De Fleece Update: Completed Gradient Magic & Right Into a New Spin

Colorful skeins yarns in warm tones fill the frame in a gradient, with a white string forming a small knot. Blurred patterned background. Cozy mood.
My Spindle Spun BFL Wool Gradient Dyed By Fossil Fibers

Friends, I did it. I finished spinning my gradient set from Fossil Fibers on the drop spindle for Tour de Fleece 2025! It’s so unbelievably soft and saturated that I keep catching myself petting it absentmindedly like a contented cat (meanwhile Jonsey is giving me the side eye 'cause he thinks those should be HIS pets).

Tour de Fleece (TdF for short) is a spinning challenge that takes place during the Tour de France. As cyclists ride, spinners spin. Some hardcore spinners follow both challenges closely but to be honest, I have not looked into what is happening in Tour De France one time 🤣 #JustHereForTheFiber. This year, I [gently] committed to spinning a gradient on my drop spindle (because I enjoy a good mobil project that fits in a basket next to my coffee on the table).

Now that the yarn is done… I’m dreaming up a sweater. I keep envisioning a cozy yoked pullover where this glowing hand-spun transitions through the yoke and sleeves, while the body stays a soft natural shade. If I spin the yarn for the body, I am doing it on the wheel because: speedy factor. While considering this undertaking, I have moved over to the wheel and am working on a lovely braid of BFL dyed by Koomasi. I promise to come share some pics next week after TdF wraps up!

A Dose of Woofling Cuteness

Play hard, rest well, and don’t be afraid to get messy on the way to joy.

Now that Nanuq has had all his vaccines and his immunity is up, we finally got to take him on a real-deal summer camping trip!

We headed to the river, where he galloped and splashed and frolicked until he collapsed in a triumphant, sandy, mud-streaked heap of joy. He curled up in the tent that night with the sleep of a creature who has truly lived.

Honestly? It was a reminder I needed: play hard, rest well, and don’t be afraid to get messy on the way to joy.

Empty Nesting: One Room, Infinite Possibilities

A small torn paper with a simple black doodle with hearts
some hapenis 😂

YoungSon2 has officially moved out! He’s staying with family in Bellingham while he job hunts and looks for his first place to rent. (If you’re in the area and know of anything, or are looking to hire someone who is kind, reliable, and shows up ready to make your day better, email me!)

His room is empty. Like, vacuumed-under-the-bed empty. Which is wild. The energy in the house has shifted in that specific, slightly aching, slightly thrilling way it does when a big chapter closes and a new one opens. At the same time, I can't seem to bring myself to close this last one all the way, I had to leave the dancing hapenis on his wall because it makes me grin.

So of course I ask you… what do we do with this room now? Because my personal opinion is that it aught to be filled with yarn and art projects.

I turned my son's room into a library office! Wall to wall books and a big desk!

WOW, all that gradient on a DROP spindle! I would've been impressed if it had all been done on a wheel, even more since it was done on a drop spindle. THAT is devotion to spinning. This new format is easy to access and a quick, fun read. Keep on keepin' on.

Love the idea & looking forward to connecting with others who share the same passion as I do!! While tempting to say go with the flow... I am going a slightly different route for your new space! I recently remodeled a bedroom and turned it in to a small room to just "be" in. Its loaded with art & pics on the walls, records, books, comfy chairs and, of course, unfinished projects 😄 Its just a nice space to go to without committing to any one thing. Regardless, do what makes you happy and brings inspiration to you! Thank you for sharing!!
