Raising my children in a Waldorf inspired homeschool community, the little gnomes scampering about were a common site. When they began knitting, these hats were one of their first projects. Not only are they quite simple, they are with super bulky yarn and large needles, making them a super quick knit for an adult or a reasonable undertaking for little hands. I have a lot of warm and fuzzy feelings when it comes to little (and big) gnomes going about their gnomey day and this pattern holds a special place in my heart, honoring that time I had with my boys in the Boreal Forest of Alaska.

Gnomes play an important roll in our family's traditions. They are inventive, creative, self reliant and yet fully a part of the Land they live in. They are guardians of the forest, friends of the animals who are their neighbors and generally cozy people going about their tiny lives. Gnomes embody all that I hope to move through the world with and all I hope to model for my children.
Yarn Ideas For the Gnomey Hat Knitting Pattern:

Malabrigo Rasta is a favorite yarn of mine because the color is so deep and the merino so soft. Freia Ombre Super Bulky is a special special yarn I don't often get to work with and I needed a project that would only use one skein: enter the ombre Gnomey Hat. I have had the pleasure to make a few Gnomey Hats out of Freia Ombre Super Bulky and I gotta say they are all stunning. I do believe tho that there is a time and place for a hearty acrylic that can handle what ever a kiddo puts it through. For that reason I included Lion Brand Mandala Thick and Quick. The stripes are fun, the colors lovely and the yarn is super affordable. Three things I'm here for. Do you have a favorite Super Bulky Yarn? Let me know in the comments cause I always wanna find more options!
